We've got a long couple of weeks ahead of us as we wait for final decisions from our last three schools. As there has still been no interview invite from Berkeley, we're pretty sure they'll be sending a big NO our way next week. We've still got a little hope left in us for Chicago and London.
Unless we get big news from Chicago, I will be flying out to North Carolina at the end of the month to attend admitted students' weekend at both UNC and Duke.
Now to those things other than school! I posted a few of our wedding pictures on theknot.com - they're having a 'Best Weddings of 2007' competition. And, based on our initial impressions of the other photos already posted, we decided that we should definitely enter. A little more love from Duke
Duke notified us today that I've received a partial merit scholarship. While we're still waiting to hear from UNC, where they let us know I was a finalist for scholarships, we weren't expecting anything at all from Duke. It's a great school, and we counted ourselves lucky to have gotten in, so a scholarship really is icing on the cake!
It's not a full ride, but it will cover about 25% of my tuition each year. And that's 25% less we'll owe back in two years!

which blue looks best on us?
Carolina blue, or Blue Devil blue?
That's right, we've now been accepted at TWO schools in North Carolina - our Duke acceptance came in today! And, much to my mother's delight, that now means that the chances of us moving back to the South have gone up dramatically. Unless we see some love from Chicago, London or Berkeley (all super competitive schools that are a stretch for me), we'll be looking for jobs and apartments in the Raleigh area.
The end is finally approaching, with over half of our responses in. And three out of four isn't too bad!

it had to happen sooner or later . . .
but naturally, it happened on our honeymoon! So here's the top 5 reasons we didn't want to attend Kellogg (Northwestern's business school) anyway:
1) We don't look good in purple.
2) Who really wants to be a 'wild-cat'? They can't even specify which cat?
3) No one in their right mind wants to play water polo for the Big Ten.
4) Evanston: all the cold weather of Illinois, none of the excitement of a real city.
5) Can you really respect a school named after a cereal? There's probably a picture of Tony the Tiger on each diploma . . .
So moving on to other schools, I had my Chicago interview this past Monday with an alumnus who works for Disney. It went really well - he said that he usually tries to write his review by asking "would I hire this person?" and then told me that if I wanted a job . . . So I think I've done as much as I can, and we just have to see if Chicago thinks I'm MBA material. And considering that, even after making the interview cut, my chances are still only about 1 in 4 of getting in, Chicago's still a long shot for me.
My London interview is Tuesday with an alumnus who works for Warner Brothers. Unfortunately, the interview is at his office in Burbank - in terms of California traffic, he might as well be in Arizona because it's going to take me about the same amount of time to get there. Also, there's apparently a presentation section - the guy gives me a topic, and I have five minutes to prepare a five minute 'presentation' (i.e. speech) on it. Fortunately, that's pretty much what I did in debate every weekend for four years in high school, so hopefully I can rely on those old skills. I do have faith in my ability to BS about something for five whole minutes.
So that's all that's new on the school front. As of Tuesday, I will have interviewed with every school but Berkeley, and we're still holding out hope that they'll ask me. We know that London and Chicago will not release decisions until the actual deadline date (listed at right), so there's still a bit of a wait there. We're still hopeful about Duke's decision, which will be released THIS Friday! Now if UNC would only give me a final scholarship decision . . .

the long awaited honeymoon begins!
That's right - Jonathan and I are off to the south coast of Oregon today. We'll be in Gold Beach through Thursday, and then head down to Mendocino for a couple of days before returning home.
Work has been so crazy for both of us the last couple of weeks, not to mention the stress of applications, so we're both really excited about a week of relaxing!
Hopefully we'll have some school updates waiting for us when we return!

A weekend (plus Monday) of good news . . .
I haven't gotten any more acceptances, but I also haven't been rejected anywhere yet, so I guess that's something to be happy about! Despite that, we have gotten some news, most of which is pretty good.
On Saturday, I finally got official notification of my BU acceptance, in a nice leather portfolio with a super-nice pen! And (here's the kicker) the packet included notification that I've been given a dean's scholarship in the Public & Nonprofit Program totaling $30k per year. Tuition is about $35k a year at BU, so we could get an MBA from a top 50 school for a whopping $10,000 (over two years). Pretty impressive, I think. So, at least for the moment, BU is back on the negotiating table.
This revelation wasn't the big hit you'd think it would be with the financial planner of the house, who made a grumpy face and was heard muttering something about having to go buy a Tedy Bruschi jersey. $30k or no, someone isn't thrilled with the idea of living in the land of the New England Patriots :)
I also received my official notification from UNC - it was a nice binder full of information about the program and Chapel Hill. Exciting, but it didn't include any financial aid information, so we don't know if they're going to even come close to BU's offer. Apparently they send financial aid notifications out on Thursday - hopefully it will be full of Valentine's love for us!
And then the Monday news - I've been asked to interview at London AND the University of Chicago! This is pretty exciting - they do not ask everyone to interview, so this means I still have a chance!! I've learned through the application process that being asked to interview at these schools is a big deal, so I'm thrilled they consider my application strong enough to warrant the interview.
We're glad we have so many options, at least for the moment, but living in limbo is tough. I think we'll both be thrilled when we can actually make a decision and start making moving plans!

My mother will be thrilled . . .
because we've been accepted to UNC Chapel Hill!
It's a big acceptance for us, mainly because it comes so early :) We've got to wait over a month to hear from Duke, and almost two months to hear from everyone else.
Sadly (especially for Dorothy), this means we'll be crossing Boston off our list. There is such a huge difference in the rankings (and thus, recruiting) between Boston and all the other schools, it just doesn't make sense to go there if we've gotten in anywhere else.
Hopefully this won't be the last acceptance we get, but we're going to enjoy this for at least a few days!!
